Abstract

With a growing body of evidence showing that art improves health and well being, the Children’s Cancer Centre (CCC) has a strong commitment to integrating and using art to support children and young people at GOSH. A comprehensive strategy led by GOSH Arts will see new artworks created especially for the CCC which will align with interior design, wayfinding and donor recognition across the building.

GOSH Arts are committed to developing briefs and creating artworks in collaboration with children, young people and staff, and working alongside the design team, to build a portfolio of site-specific artworks that will visually communicate GOSH as an internationally recognised place for the exceptional treatment of illness in children and young people.

There are 3 strands to the CCC Art Strategy:

Welcome to GOSH Artworks will be commissioned to enhance the arrival experience to the hospital, creating a warm and child friendly welcome. This also includes the experience of families coming to GOSH during the construction period, with artwork created for the temporary entrance and the public realm.

Innovation and Integration Integrated artworks for key areas of the CCC are being developed to support children with specific challenges related to social and clinical experiences they might have in the hospital environment.

Applied Art These are artworks which will put the finishing touches to the building, making it feel homely. They might include framed artwork, vinyl wallpaper, bespoke furniture, and other interior design enhancements.

Collectively the artworks that are commissioned for the CCC, many of which will be developed in collaboration with children, young people, their families and staff, will help transform our future hospital into a welcoming, therapeutic and playful environment which feels like a home away from home.
