Abstract

Background We conducted a retrospective study in the Diabetology and Nutrition Endocrinology Department of the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Oujda, Morocco. For this, we used SPSS 21 software for data collection and analysis.

Case Report(s) We collected 220 type 1 diabetic patients, with a mean age of 12,8±4,49 years old. This study included 108 girls and 112 boys. In 29% of cases, the duration of diabetes was longer than 5 years, while in 70,9% the diabetes was recent, with an average duration of 14 years. A family history of diabetes was found in 71,8% of cases. In 13% of cases, anti GAD antibodies were positive, however anti IA2 antibodies were positive only in 6% of cases. A thyroid evaluation carried out in 178 cases showed hypothyroidism, with positive anti-TPO antibodies in 8% of cases. Cœliac disease was investigated in 71 cases, and was confirmed in 14% of cases.

Conclusion(s) Type 1 diabetes is frequently associated with autoimmune diseases. Systematic screening at the time of diagnosis and periodically should be done to prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment.
