2022, Clinics in PerinatologyCitation Excerpt :In infants, during fasting, the inter-digestive motility cycle is characterized by quiescent periods, nonpropagating activity, and phasic propagating activity (migrating motor complex).59 These migrating motor complexes are decreased in preterm infants but improve with maturation.59,60 The fed state is characterized by persistent motility activity in both term and preterm infants,59 and may be modified by feeding methods (infusion rate) and nutrients (caloric density, concentration, osmolality, fat and fiber content, pH).61
